Olympics
The Olympic symbol.
In 700 B.C., the Olympic Games were invented to honor the god, Zeus. The Greeks had many different games like this, but the Olympics are the ones that have lasted throughout the ages.
The first day of the five-day Olympic games was devoted to sacrifices to the Gods. The races were four stages, measured in stades. A stade is 192 meters. Wrestling, Boxing, and pancratium were held. This was fighting. In the later, more harsh boxing, the fight would get very brutal, and only if one admitted defeat. Horse-racing was another extremely popular game. 6 laps, and no stirrups made this game exhilarating and exciting to watch. Only wealthy could compete in this game, due to the cost of training, equipment, and feed of the horse and rider. It wasn't the rider who got the Olive wreath, but sadly it was the owner. Chariot horses were also an event in this area of the Olympics. Discus, and javelin throwing were also used.
